Hidden Figures

Find the shape inside the clutter

A classic embedded-figures test: five simple shapes labelled A–E, then busy line drawings. For each drawing, decide which shape is hidden inside it at the same size and orientation. 50 items in 5 minutes, with a guessing penalty.

Every subtest explained, how the 20–80 score works, the retake rule, and how to study.

What to expect

  • Five reference shapes (A–E) and complex drawings to match against them.
  • On the real SIFT: 50 items in 5 minutes.
  • The hidden shape is never rotated or resized.

What it measures

  • Picking a simple figure out of a complex background
  • Holding five reference shapes in memory
  • Visual discrimination at speed

Instructions

  1. 1Learn the five shapes cold before you start scanning.
  2. 2Look for distinctive corners and angles, not the whole outline.
  3. 3A considered skip can beat a blind guess.

Tips

  • The target keeps its exact size and orientation — no rotating.
  • Trace one distinctive edge through the clutter.
  • Don't get anchored on a drawing; move on if it won't resolve.
